Volunteers of Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (Unisame) on Wednesday appealed to the petroleum companies to donate diesel for trucks carrying relief goods to earthquake affected areas.
They also appealed to National Logistics Cell (NLC) to carry goods till dead points and then have them lifted by helicopter in this manner about 80 percent of the distance will be covered by trucks and only 20 percent lifting will be dependent on helicopters.
They said that a large numbers of helicopters are available in Afghanistan and the friendly country can be requested for providing helicopters, temporarily, for the relief work.
They observed that help received from friendly countries is not being mobilised and goods are lying stuck at collection points due to lack of logistics. They suggested that friendly country China might be requested to provide a fleet of helicopters for airlifting the relief goods.
President Unisame, Zulfikar Thaver said that the Pakistan army is very organised, focussed and determined to face the challenge and contributing its very best ability and potential. At the same time Thaver endorsed the suggestions of his volunteers that the most important requirement is logistics and for this the government should not hesitate to hire the best logistic companies of the world for prompt deliveries to affected places for saving lives of the citizens.
To consolidate relief logistics support for earthquake victims all national organisation like NLC, Railway, National and private airlines, trucking companies, courier companies and other logistics-related institution should come forward to play their vital role to help victims, he appealed.
"All multinational logistics companies can also be helpful to activate international relief organisations and donors. There is a need to lift cargo from Karachi airport to Peshawar and Islamabad to minimise the backlog of relief goods and streamline supplies for victims, in this connection national and private airlines may carry priority cargo voluntary on all flight to Peshawar and Islamabad.
From there NLC and other trucking companies can lift the cargo for final destination."
