PCCW, Hong Kong's dominant fixed-line phone company, said on Friday that its plan to privatise mobile carrier Sunday Communications had received support from Huawei Technologies, a major Sunday shareholder.
PCCW Ltd now controls 79 percent of Sunday Communications Ltd, with Huawei holding about half of the remainder, or nearly 10 percent of the company.
PCCW and Sunday said jointly that Huawei had expressed in writing its intent that its shares "will be cast in favour of the resolutions to approve and implement" a privatisation offer.
"Shareholders and potential investors should be aware that Huawei's confirmation only relates to its present intention as at 12th October, 2005," they said in a statement.
"Such letter of intent is not binding on Huawei, which may change its intention at any time."
PCCW previously offered to buy the remaining Sunday shares it did not already own for HK$0.65 per share.
