A little girl was rescued on Monday after living for nine days under a cupboard in her home that was destroyed in the devastating earthquake, the military said.
The parents of six-year-old Tajun Nissa had survived in the remote mountains east of the ravaged town of Balakot and told soldiers who hiked there with supplies that they did not know their daughter's fate.
The troops pulled apart the rubble and found the girl weak but still alive underneath a small cupboard, chief military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan told AFP.
"She was lucky because she was in a cavity in the rubble," he said.
"This was a truly miraculous survival and rescue."
It was not known what if anything the girl was able to eat since the October 8 earthquake. Sultan said the soldiers took the family to an army relief camp.
An army officer based in Balakot, who identified himself as Captain Nauman, said that the girl was unconscious when she was rescued. "She had some superficial wounds but she got some treatment at the relief camp and regained consciousness. She appears to be in stable condition at the moment," the officer said.
In another incident, the military said it found an eight-year-old boy who had been stranded in a village in the Kaghan valley north of Balakot. The boy, Abdul Jabbar, had come to visit relatives when the earthquake struck. He was sent back to his parents in Haripur.
He was left alone for eight days till he was recovered by army rescue teams early on Monday," a military statement said.
