Sindh local government department contributes over Rs 10 million

Sindh Local Government department has contributed Rs 10.971 million to the President's Relief Fund.
Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Local Government, Wasim Akhtar presented the cheque to Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan as contribution made by the employees of Sindh Local Government from their salaries for the relief and rehabilitation of quake victims here on Monday.
Later, talking to newsmen, Dr Ibad said according to statistics of Provincial Relief Commissioner, relief goods amounting to Rs 2.5 billion had so far been despatched to the tremor-stricken areas from Sindh with major contribution from Karachi. So far these goods had been forwarded to the victims through 32 air trips, eight trains, large number of various trucks and by private vehicles of numerous volunteers.
Furthermore, as many as 40 rescue teams and 30 teams of medical experts from Karachi alone had gone to the northern parts of the country and Azad Kashmir to participate in the relief work.
He lauded the efforts of the people of Sindh for demonstrating unshakeable spirit and commitment by making generous contributions both in cash and kind for the disaster-stricken people.
He also appreciated the call of Muttahida Qaumi Movement's Chief Altaf Hussain made for the collection of relief goods and participation of people in the rescue and relief operation to which, he said, people responded very positively.
He appreciated the active and collective role being played by the entire social, welfare and various other public and private organisations in this regard.
Praising the dauntless courage of the armed forces, the Governor said despite unfavourable climatic conditions the troops were continuing the rescue and relief operation in the remote and hazardous areas of the country.
"With this fervour and passion being exhibited by the people from all segments of society I am sure we will emerge successful in this test," Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad expressed the hope.
Regarding adoption of destitute children and orphans from the affected areas, the Governor said that Prime Minister had already announced the policy in this regard. However, in case anyone, acting on his own will and without due consultation with the Government, adopted any such child, the same must be informed to the Government, he advised the people.
Replying to a question, Dr Ibad said 'Disaster Management Task Force' had been formed and its first meeting was scheduled to be held on Wednesday.
The task force would formulate a comprehensive strategy in the light of research conducted by various organisations of repute to successfully meet the emergency situation in case of any natural calamity. Dr Ishratul Ibad also informed that President General Pervez Musharraf had constituted an authority that would undertake reconstruction of the ruined areas after making an estimate of the loss.
The Governor also appreciated the City District Government's announcement of Rs 20 million contribution for President's Relief Fund made by the newly elected Karachi City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal.
