Ambassador Jehangir Karamat has eulogised the Pakistani Community for its enthusiastic participation and generous donations towards the earthquake relief fund.
In a letter to the community, he said, "I am particularly proud of our community here, Pakistanis in the United States, who have given and continue to give generous support. Community members from across the country have stepped forward to bring relief to their homeland by donating from their own pockets, organising successful fundraisers, mobilising communities of activists, and for some, even travelling to Pakistan to volunteer on the ground. Never before have we seen such strength or compassion within our community."
"But even as we see the successful results of such energy and vigour, the cost of recovery and caring for the 3.3 million homeless are far from met," he said.
The Ambassador said that after the search and rescue mission the recovery and rebuilding would be focussed that would cost billions of dollars and might take five to ten years to complete and added much more support was needed to efficiently provide care in both short and long-term efforts.
Jehangir Karamat said long-term recovery included rebuilding infrastructure including communications systems, buildings, transportation systems, homes, and whole communities.
The President's Relief Fund would continue to work toward reconstructing Pakistan and as promised by him, the funds would be used transparently, he added.
