Rich tributes paid to Mushtaq Memon

A condolence meeting for senior journalist, Mushtaq A. Memon was held at Karachi Press Club wherein the speakers representing different tiers of the society paid rich tributes to late Memon who, they said, throughout his life upheld principles, and advocated and worked for betterment of the downtrodden people.
Mushtaq A. Memon was the elder brother of former federal information minister and Chairman, Parliament's Defence Committee, Senator Nisar A. Memon. Late Mushtaq opted not to marry so that he could spare all the time and energy to duly honour his social commitments.
Before his death, he was working with daily Dawn at Karachi. He left behind a large number of standard write-ups and analysis for the public specially journalists and politicians to learn and move in right direction.
Number of journalists, social activists, politicians and writers joined to mourn the death of a socialist, progressive, democrat, humanist, and an honest and genuine man who from his student life to his long stay in journalism set precedents of how to speak, write and practice the truth.
The speakers noted that he was the man of exceptionally high calibre with no lust for wealth or any office. He was a giant behind the scene playing vital role in students' and political campaigns always ready to face odds. He was also jailed for working for restoration and promotion of democracy during past military rules.
Senator Nisar A. Memon thanked the Press Club officials for arranging the condolence meeting for his brother and their senior colleague.
He shared the political experiences of his elder brother since the days his studentship. He acknowledged that the credit for his exposure and statesmanship went to late Mushtaq.
Giving the family account, he said Mushtaq was the first son after three daughters of his father who belonged to upper middle class. Thus, Mushtaq enjoyed special status and was privileged over the sisters and brothers.
"Mushtaq was born with silver spoon. However, he later chose to walk on thorny track for upholding the truth, and campaigning for the depressed," Nisar Memon said.
Others who spoke were President, Karachi Press Club, Sabihuddin Ghausi, General Secretary KPC, Najeeb Ahmed, other senior journalists Wali Rizvi, Usman Baloch, Wahid Basheer, Maqsood Yousfi, Nargis Khanum, Imtiaz Faran, Yousaf Khan, Sarfraz Ahmed Khan, Babar Hayatt, Usman Ghani, and the politicians and friends Meraj Muhammad Khan and Yousaf Masti Khan.
