imageISLAMABAD: Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has facilitated 160 industries through its Industry Support Programme, launched to promote competitiveness.

Besides, the Authority also supported 973 businesses supported its Economic Revitalization of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA (ERKF) project during last three years.

Sources at Industries and Production Division while highlighting the steps taken for promotion of industries in the country said SMEDA implemented 23 Public Sector Development programme (PSDP) projects for support of relevant industries.

The Authority obtains 85 and 102 pre-feasibility studies in English and Urdu respectively and their main objective is to provide information about investment opportunities to Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

The sources said new Automotive Development Policy (2016-21) has been launched to attract green and brown field investments in automobile and auto vendor industry while new Entrant Policy for Motorcycle Industry was launched to promote investment in new and innovative technology.

The sources said Engineering Development Board (EDB) took an initiative to compile/publish "Directory of Engineering Goods Exporters" which was widely circulated to Foreign Diplomatic Missions, Pakistani Missions Abroad, Local/Foreign Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The other initiatives included Prime Minister's Youth Business Loans, Special Projects with International Development Partners and Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA).

The sources said after colonization of Karachi Export Processing Zone (KEPZ), phase-I & II, PC-I for expansion of KEPZ Phase-III is in process of approval while Gwadar Export Processing Zone is to be developed on 1000 acres. Pre-qualification of contractors for execution on BOT is in process whereas, PC-I for establishing zone on 500 acres is under process for funding through PSDP.

EPZA and Faisalabad Industrial Estate Development and Management Company (FIEDMC) have signed an MOU for establishing an Export Processing Zone in Faisalabad. Feasibility study by consultant is in process.

Khairpur Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) has been established and is spread over 140 acres of land. It is located at Tando Nazar Ali on Main National Highway, Khairpur.

The other initiative was Marble City-Risalpur which is a cluster based project spread over an area of 185 acres, located on Nowshera - Mardan Road in Risalpur.

With regards to details of industries promoted during last three years, the sources said EDB organized visit of 17-member business delegation-companies of industrialist and businessmen to Minsk - Belarus this year and made arrangements for provision of international experts/consultants for capacity building of engineering industries to increase their competitiveness.
