Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Tuesday said the government would continue to make efforts for further enhancing the defence capabilities of the countries armed forces and provide all necessary resources for this purpose.
He was talking to newly-appointed Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral M. Afzal Tahir who called on him at the Prime Minister House.
The Prime Minister lauded the role being played by the armed forces in providing relief to the people in the earthquake-affected areas under most difficult circumstances.
He said that the armed forces, government departments and agencies as well as civil society organisations and NGOs all have joined hands in providing speedy relief to the victims of the quake tragedy.
The newly-appointed Chief of Naval Staff remained with the Prime Minister for some time and discussed with him matters relating to Pakistan Navy.
Felicitating Admiral M. Afzal Tahir on his appointment as the new Chief of Naval Staff, the Prime Minister said Pakistan Navy has a critical role in protecting the vital sea lanes and ensuring uninterrupted flow of maritime traffic in the entire region.
Pakistan's strategic location, over looking the major sea lanes puts a heavy responsibility on Pakistan Navy to patrol, protect and ensure uninterrupted traffic, he added.
The Prime Minister said he has allocated adequate resources for surface, subsurface and aerial capabilities of the Pakistan Navy as all three are critical to effectively safeguard the naval frontiers.
Shaukat Aziz said Pakistan is a country which strives for peace and it could be achieved through strength.
