Hyderabad Zila Nazim Kanwar Naveed has emphasised for converting prisons into reforming and rehabilitation centres so that inmates after their release could lead a life as responsible members of society.
This he observed while presenting Eid gift of clothes and eatables to mentally retarded women prisoners at the Central Prison Hyderabad. The jail administration and philanthropists of the city had arranged those Eid Gift packs.
Talking to prison authorities, he said District Government Hyderabad was already operating a Women Handicraft Training Centre in the Special Women Prison Hyderabad with the financial assistance of District Baitul Maal and was ready to contribute other reforming activities if launched by jail authorities.
He said there were number of prisoners confined due to lack of litigation facilities at their disposal or non payment of simple fine against them. Now, it was the prime duty of NGOs working for the welfare of prisoners to conduct survey, collect data and approach lawyers and donor organisations to solicit justice for destitute prisoners.
He said District Government Hyderabad was also intended to reactivate District Prison Committee to supplement those efforts. He said after Eid ul Fitr he himself would visit the Central Prison and Special Women Jail Hyderabad to identify basic problems of prisons. He stressed upon the management of prison to provide all facilities to the prisoners in accordance to the Jail Manual. He also lauded the efforts of Jail management and other donor organisations for opening school and Computer Centre in Women Jail and added that that step would be proved as source in converting prison into reforming centre. However, he made it clear many other academic, technical and moral steps were needed to achieve the objectives.
Later, the Zila Nazim distributed food items and cloths among 42 mentally retarded and 87 women prisoners, separately, and announced Rs 50 thousand for religious library for prisoners.
MPA Syed Arshad Shah, AIG Jail and other jail officers were also present on the occasion.
