Romania has reaped 9.057 million tonnes of maize from 90 percent of 2.7 million hectare so far, Agriculture Ministry data quoted by state news agency Rompres showed on Monday.
EU-candidate Romania, one of the major cereal producers in the Black Sea region, had expected a maize and sorghum crop of 9.9 million tonnes this year, down from last year's 14.7 million tonnes, due to extensive floods.
Torrential rains this year destroyed 600,000 hectares of various crops, killed dozens of people and left thousands homeless.
Quoting ministry data, Rompres said maize harvesting was likely to be completed sometime this week, with a total crop estimated at around 10 million tonnes.
The European Commission has granted imports of wheat and maize under its special duty-free quotas with Romania and Bulgaria, which are due to join the bloc as early as 2007.
It approved the import of 230,000 tonnes of wheat and 149,000 tonnes of maize from Romania.
