Tiger Woods shot an opening seven-under-par 65 at the HSBC Champions tournament here on Thursday to lie one shot off the three-way lead held by Australian Peter O'Malley, England's Nick Dougherty and Paul Lawrie of Scotland.
A dropped shot on his last hole of the day cost the 10-time major winner his spot atop the leaderboard alongside the trio, who all carded bogey-free 64s at the five-million-dollar 2006 European Tour season-opener.
Lying alongside Woods after also shooting 65s around Shanghai's 7,143-yard course at Sheshan International Golf Club were David Howell, South Korea's KJ Choi and Dutchman Roland-Jan Derksen.
Reigning US Open champion Michael Campbell and Englishman Kenneth Ferrie were a shot further back at six under par.
World number two Vijay Singh, Paul Casey, Ian Poulter, Thomas Bjorn, Asian number one Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand and China's top golfer Zhang Lianwei were among eight players at five under par, three off the lead.
However, Colin Montgomerie, the newly crowned European number one who was playing alongside Woods and Zhang, shot a disappointing two-over-par 74.
