Rawal town Nazim Sheikh Rashid Shafique has reiterated his resolve to provide pure drinking water to people and said government would install 220 water filtration plants in all 46 union councils of the town worth Rs 90 million.
"We have called tenders for the purpose and after very short period the work would be started on the project", Shafique said while talking to reporters here on Saturday.
He said water filtration plants would be installed to provide clean and safe drinking water to the citizens of Rawalpindi. It would help to improve the health of people, besides improving the living standard.
He said Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) had handed over 25 Kanals of land to federal government for construction of 400 bed hospital, which would be constructed at the site of old TB Hospital.
He said the government would fulfill all its promises made during recent local body polls. "We will use all out efforts and resources to change socio economic scenario of Rawalpindi", he added.
Talking about sewerage system, town Nazim said sewerage system was improper, hence, the City District Government would launch a project for construction of modern sewerage system.
"Loan agreement regarding this project was signed by District Nazim Raja Javed Ikhlas in Manila and Asian Development Bank would provide Rs 5.142 billion for the project", he added.
Answering a question, the Nazim said Punjab government had granted the sanction to appoint 300 more sanitary workers for cleanliness in the city.
Rashid said Town Government would transfer powers to Union Nazims for sanitation and cleanliness in their respective areas and UC Nazim would be responsible and answerable in case of any complaint from any corner.
The TMA, he said would celebrate cleanliness week from Monday (November 14) during which the sanitation of all over city would be focused, he said.
To another question he said TMA had strength of 3,000 officials of different capacities, out of which 35 per cent were transferred to Potohar Town after city administrative bifurcated.
"We have transferred 10 to 15 per cent staff to Potohar Town", he added.
He showed dismay over increasing encroachment and expressed resolve to remove encroachment from the city. He called upon trader community to come forward and cooperate with government to resolve that problem.
