Listless trading ruled on the commodity wholesale markets in the aftermath of the three day Eid holidays and holiday on account of Iqbal day, traders who expected trading to pick after so many holidays.
On the first day, most commodities maintained pre-Eid holiday level as traders were trying to change jovial mood to business. They said customers were not in sight far and near. All the traders and customers appeared tired from hectic Eid shopping and celebrations. However, only change was marked in till superior which shed Rs 25 to Rs 1675. The inferior type stayed put in low demand.
On the second day, Tuesday grain market still looked deserted though elsewhere raw rubber was marked down obviously due to lower demand.
However raw rubber from Ceylon Pale Crape down Re 1 to Rs 58, latest Semnan Tex down Rs 5 to Rs 345 and Thai (GT) down Rs 5 to Rs 345. On Wednesday markets were seen with shutters down owing to Iqbal Day and hence price variations were not received.
On Thursday widespread changes were seen on the grain market as many buyers tried to bridge supply gap caused by the Eid holidays, dealers said.
As a result of the high demand, prices went up on increasing demand by the buyers, on the cereals side, except guwar, all commodity items showed higher trend.
Makai gained modestly at Rs 875-900, dealers said. Wheat Mexipak (old) quoted higher at Rs 1150 and new at Rs 1160. Masoor Australia plus Rs 100 to Rs 2900-3100, Dall India picked up Rs 150 to Rs 3350-3450, urad from Burma low type gained Rs 200 to Rs 1300 and good type rose by Rs 100 to Rs 1400, dealers said. Guwar, low type shed Rs 20 to Rs 1880 and better type shed Rs 45 to Rs 1980.
On the grams side, garda Punjab plus Rs 95 to Rs 1975-2025, Gram dal Punjab gained Rs 50 to Rs 2400-2450, yellow peas Canada rose by Rs 65 to Rs 1500-1550, yellow dal peas gained Rs 50 to Rs 1750-1785.
Beetle Chana No 1 went up sharply to Rs 235 to Rs 2125-2175. Beetle 50x50 followed suit and was up by Rs 125 to Rs 2050-2100 and dal beetle gained Rs 75 to Rs 2450-2500.
Upward trend was also seen on the rice sector, as a result of rising demand by the exporters and local buyers, market sources said. The Irri-9 Sindh old type gained Rs 50 to Rs 1600-1700 and new type of the same items rose by Rs 125 to Rs 1400-1450, dealers said. Basmati/D-98 Shahdadkot soared to Rs 1960-2000. Irri-white inferior type shed Rs five to Rs 985 while the better type held its overnight level at Rs 1000.
On the seed side, most of the items maintained their overnight levels except cottonseed oilcake with bag, which picked up modestly on short supply, both types gained Rs 5 to Rs 455 and Rs 465 in process of trading elsewhere mixed pattern was seen in teas: Kenyan tea PF1-A Grade up Re 1 to Rs 171, B grade down Rs 4 to Rs 156, plus C grade down Re 1 to Rs 138, C grade up Re 1 to Rs 128, BP A grade down Rs 2 to Rs 185, B grade down Rs 2 to Rs 175, plus C grade down Rs 2 to Rs 158, D-1 A grade down Rs 2 to Rs 188, B grade down quoted down at Rs 152, and plus C grade down Rs 2 to Rs 140 on Friday wheat Mexipak old and new both shed Rs 10 to Rs 1140-1150, and cottonseed cakes with bags type turned higher by Rs 3 to Rs 458 and the finer type was up Rs 5 to Rs 470. On Saturday, wheat Mexipak old and new both gained Rs 5 to Rs 1145-1155 in process of trading, dealers said. Other sectors, rice, grams and seeds did not show any significant changes due to balanced demand and supply factor, they said.
