The Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (Smeda) has set up Computerised Pattern Designing Centre for leather industry of Sialkot.
Official sources told Business Recorder here on Friday that the setting up computerised pattern designing centre was an addition in this export-oriented city. "The hub of cottage industries would surely play an instrumental role in modification of leather products and improvement of designing and advancement of leather industry," they said.
The computerised designing courses have been started at Vocational Training Institute (VTI) Sialkot to facilitate the business community engaged in leather industry. Keeping in view the pressing demands of the local leather industry, Smeda in collaboration with Punjab Vocational.
FACILITY CENTRE: Training Council (PVTC) had established a "Common Facility Centre" for computerised pattern designing at the Vocational Training Institute Sialkot.
This centre is fully equipped to impart pattern making, pattern grading, and marker making, plotting and material utilisation services to all types of apparel manufacturing business. It would be supportive for manufacturers to develop patterns for male, female and kids' clothing, sportswear and gloves with professional design services, which would certainly save the time and money.
Apart from this, the centre will also impart training in the field of pattern making both manual and computerised modes. Trainees are being imparted training through computers in the Computerised Pattern Designing Centre.
It may be mentioned that the local business community, which is engaged in leather industry, has not adequate in-house designing facilities and the establishment of this centre is a blessing for them. The centre would help solve problems pertaining to designing being faced by the business community engaged in leather industry of Sialkot.
The major exporting products of Sialkot are sports goods, surgical instruments, soccer balls, badges and cutlery and they are earning 700 million dollars annually and strengthening the national exchequer.
In the recent past, the leather industry of Sialkot had become the biggest foreign exchange earner of the country.
At present, Sialkot, Lahore and Karachi are the main cities where quality and standard leather products are being produced and exported to various foreign countries. The demand of leather garments and leather made-ups is increasing day by day and the exporters' community engaged in the leather industry is making adequate efforts to meet the international demands.
The induction of trained and skilled industrial workers in the leather industry would be much supportive in improving the quality and standard leather products and help in enhancing the overall capacity of production of industrial units.
The Smeda would provide adequate facilities to the business community engaged in leather industry for improving the designing and quality of the products. This would enable them to compete international market more easily.
The fashion world has taken a very sharp turn because the trends have totally been changed globally. Keeping in view, the sharp change in fashion world the Smeda will extend its full co-operation to the business community in improving the designing of leather garments and leather made-ups for attracting the foreign buyers.
The Sialkot leather industry has great potential for competing the international market, but extra-ordinary efforts and innovations are needed badly for attracting foreign buyers at large in global market.
