The general trend in the currency market was firm as the rupee resisted any decline versus the dollar at the weekend, but it failed to hold its gains versus the euro, dealers said.
In the open market, the rupee lost 45 paisa versus the euro for buying at Rs 70.25 and slid 35 paisa for selling at Rs 70.35 after sharp recovery versus the leading currencies in the world markets, they said.
The single European currency scored sharp gains against the rupee after gaining ground in the global market following the statement by the European Central Bank in which it was said that after keeping rates steady for nearly 2-1/2 years the bank was ready to increase the interest rates.
The rupee did not show any change in relation to the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 60.00 and 60.10 in process of subdued trading, dealers said.
INTERBANK RATES: the rupee maintained its overnight levels versus the dollar for buying and selling at 59.85 and 59.86, respectively.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The dollar-rupee parity remained unchanged amid sluggish trading trend in the local currency markets on Saturday.
According to the currency dealers, there was no change in dollar's demand and supply condition, which helped the local currency maintain its overnight position. The dollar resumed trading at Friday's closing rates of Rs 60.05 and Rs 60.15 on buying and selling counters, respectively. The dollar witnessed fractional change of one-two paisa in its worth during the day's trading but finally closed at the opening levels, the dealers said. They were of the view that the dollar could further appreciate its value against the rupee during next week.
However, the local currency registered loss against the pound sterling. The pound's buying rate improved from Friday's closing rate of Rs 102.30 to Rs 102.50, while selling rate increased from Rs 102.70 to Rs 102.90, the dealers added.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee-dollar parity remained unchanged at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Saturday.
The dollar opened at Rs 60 (buying) and Rs 60.10 (selling) against same previous rate. It did not observe any further change by the end of second session and closed at Rs 60 (buying) and Rs 60.10 (selling).
Pound sterling opened at Rs 102.30 (buying) and Rs 103 (selling) against same overnight value. It did not observe any change in the second session and closed at Rs 102.30 (buying) and Rs 103 (selling).
