Four-year-old twins who were born conjoined at the head and separated in Dallas two years ago returned to their native Egypt Sunday as independent boys. Wearing shirt and tie but their heads still protected by special helmets, Ahmed and Mohammed Ibrahim were given a heroes' welcome at Cairo International Airport, where relatives awaited them.
Born fused at the top of their heads, the babies were sent to Dallas, Texas for treatment in 2002 and underwent a 34-hour operation involving some 60 medical personnel in October the next year.
Their father Ibrahim Mohammed Ibrahim said upon arrival in Cairo that he was "very pleased with the success of the operation" and added that he planned to send his two sons back to the United States for check-ups next year.
