Please refer to letter of The Helpline Trust appearing in your esteemed daily of November 21, 2005. I strongly endorse the Trust's views. Most of the buildings in Karachi constructed by the builders and approved by the KDA functionaries are extremely substandard.
It is Almighty's Grace and Mercy for which, the citizens of Karachi are grateful that no major earthquake has hit Karachi in the last 60 years, despite it being under a dangerous/high seismic activity zone.
However, the Trust's suggestion regarding cutting down on large number of free loader travels at State expense and spending colossal amounts on convoys of most luxurious Mercedes cars, are false hopes as long as the unaccountable/unchecked military rule continues.
Similarly, there is no hope of defence spending cuts. The spending on health, education and other basic amenities, which is presently 1% of the budget, will continue to be a very low priority with the powers- that-be.
The Parliament, the Ministers, the Courts, all are powerless to rule against the military government or its personnel.
Even, the Auditor-General has no authority. The country and the people are required to be independent to have rights and independence for any improvement to take place.
The independence of the people of Pakistan is a joke.
