Former Australian captain Allan Border on Saturday congratulated West Indian batting great Brian Lara for overtaking him as the greatest run-scorer in Test cricket.
Lara surpassed Border's 11,174 Test career aggregate during his innings of 226 in the West Indies' first innings in the third and final Test against Australia at Adelaide Oval Saturday.
Lara now has a Test aggregate of 11,187 runs at an average of 54.04 in his 121st Test match.
Border, who held the record since 1994, said he watched most of Lara's innings on Friday but he missed the magic moment when he passed his record on Saturday as he was at his son's junior cricket match.
"I pass on my congratulations to Brian Lara. He is a very worthy holder of the mantle of the greatest run-scorer in Test history," Border said in a Cricket Australia statement.
"I played against Brian when he made his century (277) in Sydney in the 1992-93 season and I would rank him as one of the best three batsmen in the world.
"I have had the pleasure of seeing him play a lot of cricket and there is no doubt he is a genuine genius.
"I am sure I am not the only Australian who is pleased to see him hold this record."
