Cairo-based mobile phone firm Orascom Telecom (OT) reported a 75 percent increase in nine-month 2005 net income to 2.875 billion Egyptian pounds ($499 million) on November 21.
The firm said net income was 1.644 billion pounds in the first nine months of 2004.
Four brokerages had expected a net income figure of between 2.5 and 2.72 billion pounds.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by nearly 30 percent to 6.033 billion pounds from 4.652 billion in the same period a year ago, the firm said in a statement.
OT, which has mobile phone subsidiaries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, added that its total subscriber numbers had jumped 125 percent to 25.5 million.
Mobilink, the firm's operation in Pakistan, has more than 9 million subscribers and the Algerian operation, Djezzy, has around 6.16 million.
The firm said it dominates the market in Algeria, Pakistan, Egypt and Iraq.
