Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) with the assistance of Punjab government is setting up a 'Software Technology Park' at an estimated cost of Rs 1.5 billion in the provincial metropolis which would create 5,000 jobs apart from generating economic activities worth Rs 5 billion per annum.
PITB General Manager Dr Hassan Gillani revealed this while addressing the inaugural session of Lums International Conference on Mathematics and its application in information technology here on Monday.
Lahore University of Management and Sciences (Lums) had arranged the event in collaboration with the GC University Lahore - School of Mathematical Sciences.
Delegates from UK, Malaysia, China, Bosnia, India, Romania, Russia, Georgia, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Kirghizstan are attending the moot.
The conference would not only cover mathematics' aspects but papers would also be presented regarding other disciplines including economics, engineering, information technology and business.
The 'Software Technology Park' would be of international standard spreading over 500,000 square feet area for the software companies, call centers and other IT enabled service organisations.
PITB has also launched demand based training programme to impart necessary training to IT professionals, teachers, academic institutes and citizens. Dr Gillani further said the PITB had submitted a proposal to the Planning and Development Board to meet research and development needs of academic institutions in the province. PITB, which had invited research proposals from all the academic institutes in the province, has forwarded the same to Planning and Development Board for funding, he maintained.
PITB has initiated a project namely 'Outstanding Talent Scholarship' under which PITB would pay 100 per cent of the tuition fee for B Sc, M Sc and Ph D in computer sciences in addition to monthly stipend of Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000, he added.
The PITB has also provided support to launch Support a Family Programme (SAFP) to alleviate the sufferings of earthquake victims. The goal of SAFP is to provide Rs 6,000 per month to 10,000 families for a period of 12 months. "We are also in the process of launching a web site so that people can donate money online by using their credit cards, especially the overseas Pakistanis. PITB is setting up a call center for local and overseas donors and also developing an Aid Information Management System for donors-recipient matching and disbursement of aid in an expeditious and transparent manner. All financial transactions would be tracked and audited through the software, which is being developed by the PITB," he revealed.
Speaking on the occasion, pro-chancellor Lums Syed Babar Ali said the Lums was promoting scientific research as a primer institution of higher education. Lums would be part of initiatives taken for promotion of science subjects including mathematics, he added.
Lums Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Zahoor Hassan briefed the participants about various disciplines in the university. Convenor of the conference Dr Faqir Muhammad Bhatti also spoke on the occasion.
