The World Bank (WB) has called for appointing professional people and making the process of accountability continuous in Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KW&SB).
In a meeting with Karachi City Nazim Mustafa Kamal, administrative affairs of WB Water & Sanitation Program, Chris Heyman, appreciated the policies of City Nazim for restructuring the KW&SB. They also discussed administrative and other affairs of the Board in detail.
The Nazim said that increase in tariff of water utility would be conditional with improvement in water and sewerage facilities. "Restructuring of KW&SB is aimed at providing the citizens immediate facilities," he added.
Kamal informed the WB rep that the process of restructuring was going on and in this regard meetings with the Sindh government and 18 town nazims would be held to seek their opinion.
He said that the matter of tariff would be considered when the work of upgrading the water & sewerage system and plugging of water leakage was completed.
The City Nazim said that provision of water and sewerage facilities "is the priority of city government" and Rs 50 million has been earmarked for each town in the city. "Town nazims will give water and sewerage schemes after designing by designated consultants," he assured the WB representative.
"In fact," he said, "these 'consultants' would supervise the work and would ensure quality of work, while a third party would carry out the testing job."
He commended the consultancy services of Water & Sanitation Programme of WB for South Asia and assured that all possible steps were being taken to ensure transparency. Chris Heyman expressed satisfaction on the restructuring process and called for appointing professional people and ensuring the process of accountability in the Board.
