The Sindh Assembly on Monday deferred Question Hour till Tuesday and amidst noisy protest by the opposition took up legislation work and passed one bill, referred another to the relevant House Committee and laid three bills before the House for consideration. Speaker Syed Muzaffar Hussein Shah was in the chair.
After the recitation from the Holy Quran as the session began to take up subjects according to the order of the day, Law Minister Chaudhry Iftikhar Ahmed sought permission from the Speaker to move a motion to defer question hour and take up some legislation work.
The opposition resisted the move taking a stand that question hour was the only means through which progress of different ministries could be assessed.
However, the motion was allowed to be moved and gained majority votes.
The law minister then laid three ordinances before the House under Article 128 (2) (a) of the Constitution: Sindh Ordinance No XII - The Sindh Civil Servants Housing Ordinance 2005; Sindh Ordinance No XIII of 2005 - The Colonisation of Government Lands (Sindh Amendment) Ordinance 2005; and, Sindh Ordinance No XIV 2005 - The Sindh Disposal of Urban Land (Sindh Amendment) Ordinance 2005.
The Bill No 8 of 2004 -for the promotion and protection of the interest of consumers was presented before the House and was referred to the relevant House Committee.
The Bill No 9 of 2004 was passed, pertaining to the establishment of Indus Institute of Higher Education, with the law minister terming this bill of utmost importance and an aid to higher education promotion.
The opposition continued its protest even after the adjournment of the session, which is to meet again on Tuesday.
