The Sindh University Senate on Tuesday approved the annual budget of Rs 914.084 million, showing a deficit of Rs 243.097 for the 2005-06 financial year.
The meeting was presided over by SU Vice Chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui and attended by members of the senate, syndicate, academic councils, deans of faculties, representatives of Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Federal Ministry of Education.
SU Finance Director Dr Ghulam Muhammad Memon presented the budget and also revised the 2004-05 budget. He said that during the current financial year, the total revenue receipts had been estimated at Rs 670.988 million, while the expenditure had been estimated at Rs 914.085 million.
He said efforts were being made to minimise the deficit by launching evening programmes in various disciplines and also by reducing expenses, adding that the university budget of the last fiscal was a surplus budget of Rs 017.866 million, showing a deficit of 243.097 million.
The senate, approving the budget, appreciated financial help received from the HEC, and resolved to enhance the budget of the university and release of funds at proper schedule in the support of reforms introduced in higher education by the university.
The meeting also approved the appointments of the professors, associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers in the university under proposal of the HEC with slight modifications.
The senate also approved the establishment of the university campus at the Mirpurkhas.
In his presidential remarks, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted reforms and achievements of the university, and said the education was the key for all developments and sustainable efforts for promotion of education at primary and secondary levels were helping higher education as well in development of the economy of the country.
Highlighting annual progress of 2004-05, the vice-chancellor informed the senate that the university had registered overall improvement in its working.
