The Minister for Industries and Production said on Wednesday that more quarries and training institutes would be set up in NWFP, Fata and Balochistan to increase marble and granite resources exploitation.
Talking to a delegation of Strategy Working Group (SWOG), he said that this sector could earn foreign exchange with the use of modern technology.
FATA, NWFP and Balochistan are rich in marble and granite and there is need to invest more and more in these areas, he said, adding that due to lack of modern technology 85 percent of raw material is wasted. The wastage can be reduced to 57 percent by 2010 with the use of advanced technology.
The Minister was informed that if the government would give due patronage to marble and granite industry, the exports from this sector can increase up to $511 million by 2010 and $2.44 billion by 2015 from a meagre $23 million in 2004.
