A woman patient with a suspected case of highly contagious haemorrhage fever, commonly known as Congo fever, died at a government hospital on Sunday, health officials said.
"A woman with a bleeding disorder profile died this morning at our hospital," doctor Usman Qureshi of Rawalpindi General Hospital told AFP.
He said the patient was admitted to hospital on Saturday in critical condition after being treated by an untrained maternity health worker.
"We performed surgery but her condition did not improve and the bleeding did not stop," Qureshi said.
"The symptoms resembled with those of Congo virus, but we cannot say at the moment that she died of it until we have result of blood tests," he said.
However, the operation room had been fumigated and isolated as a precaution, he said and added that blood samples were collected by a team of National Institute of Health for further investigation.
