Pakistan Telecommunication Authority chairman Major General Shahzada Alam Malik (Retd) has said telecommunication growth can be enhanced further by introducing new technologies and expansion of infrastructure.
He was addressing the second-day session of the Pakistan Telecommunication Conference 2005 here, on Tuesday. The chairman emphasised to cater to the fast evolving needs of telecommunications sector we require more telecom engineers and latest technologies. He said technologies such as DWDM, CWDM and v-Sat can help provide better telecom services to consumers.
He said currently one million people are switching to the mobile service monthly and operators have to expand their networks accordingly so that they can fulfil this demand. There is a need to bring in latest telecommunication technologies in Pakistan, he added.
General Shahzada said Pakistan is an active member of the international telecom fora. It is an elected member of the International Telecom Union (ITU) and has recently elected president of the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT).
He said we encourage all regional bodies on telecommunications and participate in their activities. We can also find ways to cooperate with SAMENA Telecom Council, a Dubai-based regional telecom organisation.
Earlier, experts gave their presentations on different technologies. Paul Harrison, vice-president, World Sales, BTI explained about DWDM and CWDM technologies. He said Pakistan is a fast-growing telecom market and telecom operators, banks and other corporate ventures are installing new technologies to upgrade their networks. He said in a deregulated environment, multiple carriers are offering telecom facilities with value-added services.
Teralight CEO Thomas W. Wilson also spoke on the occasion and lauded the PTA and telecommunications and information technology ministry role in the current telecom boom in Pakistan.
