Pakistan Publishers and Booksellers Association has urged the government not to implement the decision of Ministry of Education regarding change in the educational year from March to August.
It seemed this decision has been taken in a haste without taking into account of its impact on students or the national publishing industry, said office-bearers of the Association while addressing a press conference at the local Press Club (LPC) here on Tuesday.
Chairman of the Association Khalid Parvaiz and others said that the government should defer implementation on this decision and adopt a policy in consultation with the Association. "If change in educational year is necessary, it should be implemented from year 2007 so as all the stakeholders could take steps to safeguard their interests," they added.
They were of the view that the existing system of starting educational year from March was working very well. They claimed that children of rural areas used to lend a helping hand to their parents during harvesting but after implementation of this decision they would not be able to help their parents.
Secretary General of the Association Zubair Saeed claimed that this decision would leave a negative impact on the publishing industry as they have to hold their already published books and other material for at least next six months.
Criticizing the government decision of providing free of cost books to children in government schools, he said that free books should be provided through booksellers. Children could be provided coupons against which they could get books from booksellers as it would also create a sense in the child that how important book was.
