The NWFP government on Thursday announced incentives equal to industrial workers for miners in the province and adjoining tribal areas. Speaking at a press conference here, the NWFP Minister for Industries Malik Zafar Azam said now the miners would also get incentives like workers of industrial sector in the province.
He said NWFP was the only province of country where miners were deprived of such incentives for last three decades. " After the provincial government decision the miners will get compensation for accidental deaths and will receive grants for marriages, child education and construction of houses," the minister added.
The provincial minister also announced compensation for 190 miners died in various incidents since 1999, which also included 18 miners died during October 8 devastated earthquake. He said compensation would be delivered to their families in coming few days.
Malik Zafar Azam said fabricated rooms would be constructed soon for those mining in the remote areas to enable to live a comfortable life. "Initially such rooms would be constructed at Jabbathar and Jabbakhushk in Chirat - district Nowshera," the minister informed.
He however said no exact data of miners in the province was available but according to some estimates the number could be around 100,000. He said after giving the status of industrial workers the miners would be registered. He said now a proper mechanism for miners in the province had been established. It is worth to mention that NWFP and its adjoining tribal are rich in marble, gypsum, coal, chromites and salt.
