A Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) delegation on Tuesday offered its support and co-operation for the construction of dams and water reservoirs and to build consensus in this regard during their meeting with President Pervez Musharraf.
SCBA president Malik Muhammad Qayyum was heading the delegation. Other members included Rana Muhammad Shamim, SCBA vice-president (Sindh); Saeed Akhtar Khan, vice-president (NWFP); Malik Qamar Afzal, additional secretary; and Mehmud Ahmad Sheikh, finance secretary.
Law, justice and human rights minister Wasi Zafar, Attorney General Makhdoom Ali Khan, law secretary former Justice Mansoor Ahmad were also present on the occasion.
The delegation hailed policies of the President. During the meeting, the delegation discussed various issues, including the case of Saleem Saigol advocate, who was brutally murdered in Lahore on December 19.
Welfare fund for SCBA lawyers, provision of medical facilities to its members throughout Pakistan, providing a plot for the construction of a judicial complex in Islamabad were also discussed and agreed to in principle.
The delegation urged the establishment of an independent Law Commission of Pakistan to facilitate revision of all antiquated laws and proposed establishment of high court in the federal capital.
The delegation also raised the issue of number of judges in the Supreme Court from Sindh and urged the President to address it through a proportional increase in their number. They also urged Abbottabad High Court bench building, which was decimated due to recent earthquake, be reconstructed.
The President thanked the lawyers community for their support for the construction of large water reservoirs in the country. He stated he held the judiciary and lawyers in the highest esteem and is committed for taking all possible steps to ensure their welfare and improvement.
The President agreed to facilitate Rs 100 million for lawyers welfare fund and also help them to acquire a plot for the construction of the SCBA complex in Islamabad.
The President also agreed in principle to consider the suggestion of the delegation relating to constitutional amendments, bringing uniformity in the age of retirement of judges of superior courts and increasing strength of the Supreme Court so as to do away with the appointment of much criticised ad-hoc judges.
