Complete shutter-down strike was observed all over Sindh, except in Tharparkar and Sanghar districts and Hyderabad, Sukkur and Mirpurkhas cities, to protest against construction of Klabagh dam, according to reports reaching here from interior of the province.
The reports indicated that in cities, particularly Hyderabad, Sukkur and Mirpurkhas, the strike was partial. In Hyderabad, there was shutter down at Qasimabad, Hussainabad and Site area while all shops, educational and financial institution in Hyderabad, Hirabad, Latifabad and Phuleli remained open and conducted normal business.
Reports of stoning of vehicle came from Qasimabad area. Heavy contingents of police and Rangers remained on the move. All commuter buses, vehicle for interior of Sindh remained suspended
In Jamshoro district, complete shutter-down strike was observed while Kotri remained the main trouble spot where a Karim Mills van No C -965 and Abbasi General Store was put to torch by a group of miscreants.
They also disturbed traffic system on National, Indus and Super Highways and traffic remained below normal. A group attacked the ex-sector In charge and member of MQM which resulted in injuries to three of them seriously. The were rushed to hospital, Police reported.
At Matiari District, complete strike was observed throughout the district, while from Tando Allahyar district conflicting reports were pouring in.
Reports indicated that in Tharparkar and Sanghar districts no strike was observed. However, reports of shutter-down strike were received from some isolated places, but all towns and cities remained open
According to reports from central Sindh, complete strike was observed to protest against KBD project while in upper Sindh, except for Sukkur city, complete shutter-down strike was observed.
In Sukkur city, partial strike was observed, as main bazaars remained open and conducted their normal business, while in adjacent areas shutter-down strike was observed.
Several activist of JSQM have been taken into custody but their exact number could not be ascertained in view of contradictory rumours. JSQM leader Bashir Qureshi described the strike a success, and termed it as people's verdict against construction of dams on river Indus.
