Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday underlined the need for unity among Muslims and called for projecting Islam in its true spirit as a religion of peace, brotherhood and inter-faith harmony.
"Islam is the faith which promotes peace, harmony, understanding," he said in his remarks while chairing the Altaf Gauhar Memorial Lecture here.
Renowned Muslim scholar Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf delivered the lecture on the "Causes of Conflict and their Resolutions" and spoke on challenges facing the Muslim Ummah.
The Prime Minister said in some areas of the world, people tend to link Islam to violence and extremism and talk of clash of civilisations.
"Nothing is further from the truth, he said, rejecting any such linkages and the theory of clash of civilisations.
He said Islam stands for peace and inter-faith harmony and allows practice of religion by everybody.
The Prime Minister underlined the need for unity among the Muslim Ummah and referred to the 10-year-plan adopted at the recently held extraordinary summit of the OIC in Makkah.
Earlier, in his lecture, Imam Feisal described loss of academic traditions, adoption of certain paradigms from the West and creation of split identity as major reasons for difficulties facing the Muslim Ummah today.
He underlined the need for investing in intellect and education to promote Islam in its true perspective. In this respect, he referred to great thinkers of the Muslim Ummah such as Ibne-Sena and Allama Muhammad Iqbal, saying such personalities today were non-existent in the Ummah.
