The special bench of Supreme Court of Pakistan has disposed of 850 cases pertaining to income tax, customs and sales tax. The Board-in-Council was informed on Tuesday that the pendency of appeals cases has been reduced at the highest judicial fora, as a large number of cases have been decided at the level of Supreme Court.
Sources said on Tuesday that the Board-in-Council was chaired by CBR Chairman Abdullah Yusuf and all members attended the meeting. The council mainly discussed administrative issues including setting up of new Regional Tax Offices (RTOs). The council agreed to establish three new RTOs at Islamabad, Sahiwal and an additional tax office at Karachi. The council was informed that Supreme Court special bench has played a key role in reducing litigation between the taxpayers and CBR. The decision on cases of similar nature at the level of Supreme Court would substantially reduce litigation at the level of High Court and Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT).
The council also reviewed IT project, compliance management - quarterly reporting of CBR performance as per agreed performance indicators with the World Bank (WB). Member Tax Policy and Reforms gave a presentation on the completion of reform program and approvals of various projects by the World Bank (WB).
