Pakistan People's Party has alleged that the rulers were playing with fire by adopting rigid stance on the construction of Kalabagh dam, which the party claimed was tantamount to endangering the integrity and solidarity of the country.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday Khurshid Ahmed Khan, City President, Salim-ur-rehman Mayo, Central Chief Organiser of Asif Zardari Committee, Khawaja Rizwan Alam, Tariq Raza Khan alleged that the supporters of Kalabagh dam (KBD) were shaking the foundations of the country by not respecting the resolutions of the assemblies of three federating units, which had rejected Kalabagh dam thrice.
They claimed that KBD would irrigate only two districts, Mianwali and Bhakkar, whereas not a single drop of water would be provided to the whole of Potohar right from Attock to Jehlum and a part of Seraki belt consisting of Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Leiah, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Rahimyarkhan, districts.
To prove his claim, he put forth the geographical aspect of the project and said that Chashma barrage and Chashma link canal were already passing through Mianwali and Bhakkar districts so there was no need for any reservoir in these two districts.
Describing the Kalabagh dam as a white elephant, the PPP leaders claimed that the concept of big dams has become redundant as the developed world has switched to other resources for electricity generation such as thermal, hydro, windmills, small dams and solar energy.
They demanded that in such a situation assemblies should be dissolved and the people be allowed to elect new assemblies in order to resolve such contentious issues through dialogue.
