The provincial general council of Muttahida Majlis-e-Ammal (MMA) has expressed satisfaction over Wapda's point of view on various dams including Kalabagh dam, and resolved that there must be an open debate in the parliament and in-camera briefing on technical aspects of new water reservoirs.
Chairman Wapda Tariq Hamid and MMA chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad also attended the meeting. While briefing newsmen after the meeting, MMA Punjab president Liaquat Baloch said that new water reservoirs are dire need of the country as these would help provide cheaper electricity, enhance agriculture and industrial productivity, but unfortunately the construction of new dams have been politicised.
'There is no conflict among Punjab, Sindh and NWFP but military dictatorship has disintegrated the nation to prolong its regime. The regional and linguistic parties are being patronised', he added.
He said that reservations of provinces over new dams must be removed through the council of common interest. 'We have also decided to arrange technical briefing in a joint meeting of the opposition parties in which anti Kalabagh dam nationalist leaders from Sindh and NWFP would also be invited', he said adding chairman Wapda would also be invited in this briefing.
Baloch further said that donors' conference also failed to produce desired results, as the international donors agencies have expressed dissatisfaction over the government's audit system while Shaukat Aziz ratified his failure by not empowering the parliamentary committee.
He further said the government is patronising the sugar mills owners so as to enable them to earn maximum profits. Presently one sugar mill is earning additional profit of Rs 550 million per annum. The imports during the present regime have increased by 101 percent while exports could increase only by 26 percent. He termed the elections of Naib Nazims through show of hands as violation of constitution. He demanded of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the situation and declare the elections results of Naib Nazims null and void, he added.
The meeting also condemned 'military operation' in tribal areas and Balochistan and said that act on the part of government is spreading hatred among the public.
