US blue chip stocks edged up in thin volume on Wednesday as a gain of more than $1 a barrel in crude oil futures boosted energy stocks like Exxon Mobil Corp, while the Nasdaq dipped. Exxon Mobil shares gained 0.8 percent to $56.33 on the NYSE, helping support both the Dow and the S&P 500.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 18.98 points, or 0.18 percent, at 10,796.75. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 1.60 points, or 0.13 percent, at 1,258.14. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was down 2.21 points, or 0.10 percent, at 2,224.68.
