Indonesian share prices closed 0.21 percent higher on Wednesday in quiet trade ahead of the New Year holiday, dealers said. Financial markets will be closed on Friday.
The Jakarta Stock Exchange composite index closed up 2.436 points at 1,164.143 on thin volume of 519.12 million shares valued at 486.52 billion rupiah (49.51 million dollars).
Advancing stocks led decliners 63 to 45, with 71 stocks unchanged. The rupiah was at 9,825-9,835 to the dollar compared to Tuesday's 9,825-9,835.
"Given the holidays and because there hasn't been much change in our macro-economic outlook, many people simply adopted a wait-and-see stance," said Bhakti Capital analyst Budi Ruseno.
Ruseno expected that trade would be mixed on Thursday, although he said that as it was the year's last trading day, window-dressing activity could prop up blue chips in last-minute deals.
Bank Mandiri gained 10 rupiah to close at 1,650 while rival Bank Rakyat Indonesia added 50 to 3,025. Among other major stocks, Telkom dropped 50 to 5,900 while long distance operator Indosat fell 100 to 5,600.
Carmaker Astra International was flat at 10,400 while heavy equipment unit United Tractors dropped 25 to 3,625.
