The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) collected Rs 302.1 billion in the first half of the current fiscal year (2005-06), against Rs 252.1 billion in the corresponding period of 2004-05, reflecting a growth of 19.8 percent.
According to the provisional figures released on Saturday, the CBR said it paid Rs 38.438 billion as refund/rebate to exporters for July-December 2005-06, against Rs 43.391 billion in corresponding period of last fiscal year, showing a decrease of 11.4 percent.
The CBR paid Rs 16.740 billion as general sales tax (GST) refund in July-December 2005-06, against Rs 28.185 billion paid during the same period of last year showing a decrease of 40.6 percent. The decrease in payment of sales tax refund was due to zero-rating of five major export sectors in the budget.
The customs department paid Rs 9.670 billion as rebate/duty drawback, against Rs 7.250 billion, reflecting an increase of 33.4 percent.
The CBR paid Rs 11.875 billion as income tax refund in the first half of current fiscal, against Rs 7.942 billion in the same period of last financial year, showing an increase of 49.5 percent.
Direct taxes collection stood at Rs 88.553 billion in the first half of 2005-06, against Rs 72.305 billion of corresponding period of last fiscal year, showing a growth of 22.5 percent.
Indirect taxes collection stood at Rs 213.497 billion against Rs 179.785 billion reflecting an increase of 18.8 percent. The collection of sales tax was Rs 129.3 billion against Rs 107.2 billion showing an increase of 20.6 percent.
GST collection at import stage was Rs 79.524 billion against Rs 68.572 billion reflecting an increase of 16 percent, while sales tax collection on domestic consumption was Rs 49.809 billion, against Rs 38.688 billion showing a growth of 28.7 percent. It is for the first time that GST collection on domestic consumption has shown such a remarkable growth this year.
Net receipts of customs reached Rs 60.1 billion in July-December 2005-06, against Rs 49.785 billion of last year, reflecting a growth of 20.7 percent.
The collection of federal excise duty (FED) was Rs 24.074 billion in the first half of 2005-06, against Rs 22.740 billion, reflecting a growth of 5.9 percent.
The monthly break-up showed that the CBR collected Rs 53.637 billion in December 2005. The collection of direct taxes was Rs 19.470 billion; sales tax Rs 19.225 billion; federal excise Rs 3.078 billion; and collection of customs duty was Rs 11.864 billion. An amount of Rs 7.223 billion was paid as refund/rebate during December 2005.
According to CBR, since December 31 was the last date for corporate returns of income tax, CBR expected that collection would increase and the half-yearly target would be accomplished.
The CBR will release the month-end figures of December 2005 on January 2, 2006 when the data for the last working day of December would be obtained from banks and compiled.
