Former Chairman Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Shamsul Mulk has said construction of big dams had already been delayed and further delay in that connection would have devastating effects on country's economy particularly in agriculture sector.
Speaking in a PTV programme, he said during the decade of 60s, the world's noted experts had commended the construction of at least one big dam by mentioning even the name of Kalabagh in late 80s or early 90s but it was not done.
Now, as the country has only 30 days storage capacity, construction of one dam would not suffice to fill the gap, he said.
He said the construction of big dams involved a lot of time so there was dire need of taking initiative without further delay.
To a question, he said telemetry system had already been introduced to monitor the water distribution conditions adding once it became efficient, disputes regarding water distribution would automatically come to an end.
He said the stakeholders would have access to have the account of water flow at various points by pressing a button through telemetry system. "It will be a major tool to create trust among the stakeholder", he added.
To another question, he said there was need to educate people about the benefits of Kalabagh dam, adding it would extend massive support to its construction.
However, the issue of water availability would further be complicated if appropriate steps were not taken immediately, he concluded.
