A suspected suicide bomber Monday detonated his explosives-packed car near a US military convoy in southern Afghanistan, injuring a US soldier, a woman and a child, officials said.
The attacker was the only fatality in the incident in Kandahar city, the former stronghold of the ousted Taleban regime, Kandahar province governor Assadullah Khalid told AFP. "It was a suicide attack. The target was the American convoy which was passing through," Khalid said. "Only one woman and a child were injured and were taken to hospital."
One US soldier suffered minor injuries in the blast and received medical treatment, said Mike Cody, a US military spokesman in Kabul. However Cody said the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device. An AFP correspondent at the scene said the explosion was "huge" and human flesh could be seen scattered on the ground in Kandahar's Dorahee district.
