Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that a comprehensive programme has been initiated in the quake-affected areas for the training of local people in various construction-related skills so that they could build their own houses and earn their livelihood in a respectable manner.
He was talking to a delegation of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industries (LCCI), led by its President Mian Shafqat Ali, here on Tuesday. Disaster Relief Management Society Chief Executive, Hafeez Akhtar Randhawa was also present on this occasion.
The CM further said that process of identifying affected families for 'Support a Family Programme' was being undertaken expeditiously. "Loss of human lives due to earthquake was much more than initial estimates, however, people displayed a commendable spirit of unity and solidarity at this critical juncture," he added.
According to him, the Punjab government had so far sent relief assistance of more than Rs 2.5 billion to the quake-affected areas and this process was continuing. The 'Support a Family Programme' for the relief and rehabilitation of quake survivors had been very well received at every level and industrialists, and people of all walks of life were enthusiastically participating in this programme.
Hafeez Akhtar Randhawa said that mutual contact between the donors and affected families was being ensured under the Support a Family programme.
Mian Shafqat Ali presented a cheque of Rs 7.2 million to the chief minister on behalf of Lahore Chamber for the relief and rehabilitation of the affected people.
Similarly, President Institute of Engineering Pakistan Co-operative Housing Society and Vice President Pakistan Engineering Congress Chaudhry Rasheed Khan presented a cheque of Rs one million to the chief minister, on behalf of the society, for the rehabilitation of quake-victims.
