The domestic sugar consumption increased from 3.8 million tonnes to 3.9 million tonnes during the last sugar year ending on September 30, 2005, an annual report of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) said.
The annual report 2005 released here on Tuesday revealed that the sugar consumption for the upcoming year of 2005-06 was projected at 4 million tonnes.
Similarly, the average consumption of sugar increased from 0.328 million tonnes to 0.333 million tonnes per month for the next year, the report added.
Average season's retail price per kilogram of sugar stood at Rs 25.31 against Rs 19.26 of the corresponding year. Area under cultivation of sugarcane also decreased by 66,600 hectares, the report said.
However, the millers have 577,653 tonnes commodity in the reserves, while it was 809,357 tonnes during 2003-04. Also, the millers sold 3.2 million tonnes of sugar, while they only produced 3.11 million tonnes in the last sugar year, it added.
Out of the total stock of 577,653 tonnes, the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) had a stock of 224,088 tonnes at mills and it imported stock was 92,895 tonnes, while the mills stocks on September 30, 2005 was 260,670 tons, the report said.
Meanwhile, the sugar mills have total sugar stock of 412,167 tonnes till December 15, 2005 with a TCP refined reserve stock at mills of 169,704 tonnes and stock of 2004-05 was 55,398 tonnes and 187,065 tonnes in 2005-06, the fortnightly release of the PSMA said.
Out of the total produced stock of 405,722 tonnes of sugar in the first month of the crushing season starting from November 15, 218,657 tonnes was lifted, the release added.
