NWFP Health Department is planning to hammer out an efficient model of hospital autonomy to improve the existing status of autonomy in the teaching hospitals and also to extend it to the District Head Quarter (DHQ) Hospitals of the province.
In this regard a two-day workshop has been scheduled next month in Peshawar to deliberate over the recommendations of the recently conducted evaluation of Teaching Hospitals' Autonomy.
All relevant stakeholders, including Heads of concerned departments, Public Representatives, Chief Executives, other officers from the hospitals and representatives of international agencies like World Bank and DFID will be invited to the workshop.
On the first day of the workshop, findings of the evaluation report will be disseminated among the participants, while on the second day, focus group discussions and group works will be arranged to define strategy for building the initiative on modern principles of management to ensure efficient and quality health care services.
Health Department Government of NWFP is optimistic that this endeavour in consultation with all the relevant stakeholders will not only lead to refining and enhancing the effectiveness of the current initiative but also lay the foundation for extending the autonomy to DHQ hospitals that the present Government is keenly contemplating.
It is pertinent to remind here that German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) is conducting the evaluation of the Teaching Hospitals' Autonomy on the request of NWFP Health Department. A team of three International Consultants, comprising of Christopher Charles Potter, Dr Andreas Roth and Dr Niemann visited NWFP for the purpose.
The experts visited to all the four teaching hospitals of the province as well as a DHQ Hospital and RHC and had thorough discussion with the management of the hospitals and senior decision makers of the Government including P&D and Finance Department. The interesting and sobering findings of the evaluation report will be discussed with stakeholders in January 2006 prior to the two-day workshop referred to earlier.
