LindsayLOS ANGELES: A Los Angeles judge revoked the probation of troubled US actress Lindsay Lohan and briefly sent her back to jail Wednesday pending a hearing to determine whether she violated her terms.

The 25-year-old star of "Mean Girls" was handcuffed in court. She was later released after paying $100,000 bail, and a probation violation hearing was set for November 2.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner said Lohan had failed to complete the 480 hours of community service as ordered for her jewelry theft conviction.

Most of the hours had been due to be completed at the Downtown Women's Center as ordered, but Lohan missed nine appointments. And when she did attend, Sautner said she sometimes only stayed for one hour, rather than the required minimum of four.

"There has been violation after violation," Sautner said. "Probation is a gift. It's a gift. It's not a right."

Lohan's lawyer Shawn Holley said his client was in "substantial compliance" with her probation terms, and noted that the starlet had a year to complete the community service.

Sautner ordered that once bail was paid, Lohan must complete at least 16 hours of community service at the LA county morgue before the November 2 hearing.

Lohan was sentenced to 35 days of house detention in May, as part of a plea bargain over the alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace from a jewelry shop near her home in Venice Beach.

Sautner ruled she had violated her probation for a 2007 drug and drunk driving offense when she allegedly stole the necklace on January 22.

Lohan -- once the promising child star of hit Disney movies "The Parent Trap" and "Freaky Friday" -- has a reputation for hard partying and has faced a series of legal tangles.
