The Agriculture Department of Sindh government is actively considering to re-structure the agriculture extension services under Agriculture Sector Programme - 11 with a purpose of speedy transfer of modern crop production technology amongst the farmers.
This was disclosed at a meeting held under the chairmanship of DG Agriculture Extension Naeem Ahmed Kurejo and attended by experts from agriculture extensions and research wings.
The meeting discussed in details the suggestion presented by the participants to restructure the extension services and finally reached consensus of opinion over strategies, which include increase in number of agriculture officers and field assistants' visit to farms to help growers establish the agriculture service centers at taluka level with facilities of computer, internet, telephone and mini-library. Beside this, for quick transmission of the crop production technology and other related information to the growers, training facilities would be extended up to effective level.
The meeting also proposed establishment of co-ordination committees consist of secretary agriculture, DG Agriculture Extension and Research, Nazims, agriculture officers and representatives of growers at the provincial, district, taluka and union council level to make effective linkages between agriculture extension wing and farmers. For further augmenting Directorate General Agriculture Extension, a new post of additional director general was also proposed.
Beside this, other directorates, such as Information, Training, Plant Protection, Farms and Major Crops, Co-ordination have also been proposed.
The meeting also decided that the participants and progressive growers submit comprehensive suggestions for discussion and finalisation of the programme.
The Asian Development Bank has agreed to provide financial assistance in restructuring the extension services in the province.
