The British Museum has a laboratory to judge the history of manuscripts but the same facility is not available in Pakistan. This was stated by Dr Waheed Qureshi, Professor Emiratus while delivering a lecture on the topic of "recognition of manuscript" held at Utaq-e-Iran Shanasi of the Persian Department of the Government College University (GCU).
Dr Waheed Qureshi discussed the recognition of manuscript from various angles and elaborated its historic perspective. He also highlighted the traditional techniques, which were used in the historic numbering of the books.
He said: "we in Pakistan use the "Tarqeema" devise for judging the historic length of the manuscript. He further said that the "Tarqeema" of the 8th and 9th century were different from the 10th and 11th century. He added that the first factory for producing paper was established in Samarqand in the 2nd century.
Talking about ink used in the manuscripts, he said that in Iran ink was made from Almonds and the colour of the ink was brownish.
Chairperson, Department of Persian GCU, Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Saqib in his welcome address said that the seminar library of the Persian Department had almost 4000 books in Persian.
