China hopes that the United States would play its role as 'promoter of peace' in South Asia and in settling pending disputes between Pakistan and India.
Welcoming the US President George W. Bush's visit to India and Pakistan, taking place this week, a spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Minister Liu Jianchao said at a weekly news briefing, " We welcome the visit and hope, it would be conducive to peace and development in South Asia."
China is glad to see the peace initiatives taken by Pakistan and India in the recent years to normalise their relations through dialogue and other peaceful means, the spokesman said adding " We hope the two countries would maintain the momentum of the peace efforts."
The spokesman said China attaches importance to its relations both with Pakistan and India, as its good neighbours and friends. " We wish to see peace and prosperity in the South Asian region," he added.
It may be pointed out that China has consistently been supporting peace process in the region, urging both Pakistan and India to seek negotiated settlement of their pending disputes, including the issue of Kashmir.
