Sindh Ombudsman K. Yousuf Jamal has drawn the attention of City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal towards a proposed establishment of a CNG station in North Nazimabad area.
In a letter addressed to the Nazim, the Ombudsman referred to his telephonic conversation with him on February 23, in which he pointed out that he had received an application from one Dr Shaheen A. Hasan. The doctor, a resident of North Nazimabad, pointed out the hazard the area people could face following establishment of the CNG station.
The Ombudsman said though the area in which the CNC station was proposed to be installed might have been commercialised, the installation of CNG station in a populated area was fraught with great risks.
Yousuf Jamal further stated that he could not understand as to how and under what circumstances had the District Co-ordination Officer (DCO), City District Government Karachi issued the no-objection certificate (NoC) for installation of the same vide his letter No DCO/DDO/LAW/NOC/PP-CNG/35/04-A-197/2004 dated 23-12-2004.
The Ombudsman pointed out towards a big explosion in the main Khayaban-e-Bahria, Phase-VII, Defence Housing Authority (DHA), some months back, which served as a wakeup call for local bodies to beware of the ill-considered setting up of the CNG stations.
He said in fact, no such NoCs should be issued for a patently hazardous venture without keeping the concerns of security, public welfare and environmental pollution in full view.
The Ombudsman, while requesting the City Nazim to look into the matter, hoped he would direct for immediate remedial action and let him have a report at the earliest convenience.
