United States will provide 46,000 tons of wheat worth $12 million to Pakistan for the earthquake survivors. US Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker and Economic Affairs Division Secretary Khalid Sayeed signed an agreement to this effect here on Tuesday.
According to statement issued here, the grant will replenish domestic wheat stock used to feed the quake survivors. The US Department of Agriculture donated $12 million to procure and transport American wheat to Pakistan.
The wheat will replace an equivalent amount made available by the ministry soon after the earthquake to feed over one million people from November 2005 through February 2006.
"The wheat will travel from Portland, Oregon, to the Port of Karachi. It will help Pakistan to replenish its food stocks diminished by the devastating earthquake. We are pleased to help our friend and long-time ally in re-establishing food supplies to pre-earthquake levels," said the US envoy.
