A meeting of the Cancer Research Group, Pakistan was held at the office of Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology (PSCO) here to discuss the rising cost of treatment of cancer in Pakistan.
The meeting urged the need to provide modern treatment on cost-effective basis, and disclosed that a research trial will be started here to establish the optimum dosage of drugs for Pakistani breast cancer patients.
Eminent oncologists of the country including Professor Abrar Javed, Major General Badshah Khan, Dr Ijaz Hussain Shah, Dr Ahmad Usman, Dr Sohail Murad, Dr Muneeb and others were present on the occasion, while Professor Dr Shaharyar acted as co-ordinator.
Recruitment of patients for this research study will start in mid March, and preliminary results will be available in late 2007. It is anticipated that successful completion of this trial will enable physicians to treat advanced breast cancer patients at half the existing cost, while using most modern drug therapy. The research group was established in 1999 with the objective to find solutions for the local cancer problems and to customise modern treatments according to local circumstances.
