Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) has accused National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of strengthening dictatorship and weakening democracy in the country.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Raja Pervez Ashraf, secretary general of PPPP, accused the government of using NAB against the politicians of opposition parties, terming it a worst kind of political victimisation and character assassination.
NAB has nothing to do with its objectives for which it was set up, but it is badly engaged in harassing opposition leadership and horse-trading, which in turn damages the country's political institutions and culture, the PPPP leader accused.
Pervaiz Ashraf asked why NAB was not unearthing the corruption cases against the sitting ministers. "In fact, 'government Jinta' is afraid of the former premier Benazir Bhutto's political popularity and is using official machinery for her character assassination" he added.
The PPPP secretary general said that the NAB chairman was not present in the steering committee meeting held on Thursday and the bureau was represented by an additional director, who was not able to answer relevant questions.
Pervez Ashraf said that NAB had tabled an ordinance for appointing an additional vice-chairman but the committee rejected it, saying that the chief of the organisation was not present himself in the meeting.
Referring to a report of Transparency International, the PPPP leader said that corruption in Pakistan has increased, saying that the NAB representative attending the meeting had no answer to this effect.
He said that NAB chairman insulted parliamentarians for not being present in the steering committee meeting.
